Diabetic Footwear, Shoes & Sandals — Fitted at Limbgenixx

Diabetic footwear is footwear designed to reduce peak pressure on the foot, avoid rubbing, and leave room for a custom insole. It matters because diabetes can reduce sensation in the feet, and a foot that cannot feel a problem cannot warn you about one. An ordinary shoe that is slightly too tight is a minor irritation on a foot with normal sensation; on a neuropathic foot it can go unnoticed until the skin has broken.

Limbgenixx supplies and customises diabetic footwear at our centre in Gwalior, and at our Navi Mumbai and Dharamshala centres. What suits you depends on your foot shape, your skin, whether sensation is reduced, and whether the foot has already had a problem — so suitability depends on an individual assessment.

Diabetic footwear is designed to help protect the foot. It does not treat diabetes or neuropathy, it cannot guarantee that an ulcer will heal or never return, and it is not a substitute for medical care. If you have a wound, redness, swelling, or a foot that is changing shape, see a clinician promptly — see diabetic foot surgeon in Gwalior.

Types of Diabetic Footwear

Diabetic Shoes (Extra-Depth)

Closed shoes with additional internal depth so a custom insole fits without crowding the foot, a wide rounded toe box, soft seam-free lining and a cushioned sole. The usual choice for walking any distance, for work, and for anyone who needs the whole foot covered.

Diabetic Sandals & MCR Footwear

Open sandals with a microcellular rubber (MCR) footbed — a soft, pressure-distributing material widely used for diabetic feet in India. Cooler and easier in hot weather and easier to get on and off with a stiff foot or poor eyesight. They leave the foot more exposed, so they suit indoor and light outdoor use rather than rough ground or work sites.

Custom Diabetic Footwear

Where the foot will not fit a stock shoe safely — a deformity, hammer or claw toes, a bunion, a partial foot amputation, or two feet of markedly different size — footwear is made or modified to the individual foot rather than the foot forced into a shoe.

Post-Ulcer & Offloading Footwear

Where a site has healed after an ulcer, footwear is designed to move load away from that area. This is a specific job and is covered on its own page — see offloading footwear.

What Makes a Shoe Suitable for a Diabetic Foot

These are the features that actually matter, and they are worth knowing whether you buy from us or anywhere else:

  • Depth. Room for an insole without pressing on the top of the toes. Most ordinary shoes do not have it.
  • Toe box. Wide and rounded, deep enough that toes are not compressed. Pointed shoes squeeze the forefoot precisely where diabetic feet are most vulnerable.
  • Seam-free lining. An internal seam over a toe is a rubbing point on a foot that cannot feel it.
  • No break-in period. Diabetic footwear should be comfortable immediately. Anything that needs "wearing in" is pressing on something.
  • Adjustability. Laces, straps or hook-and-loop to accommodate swelling that changes through the day.
  • Cushioned, firm-soled base. Cushioning to absorb impact, with enough stiffness to control how the foot loads.
  • A back to the shoe, where possible. Backless slip-ons let the foot slide and the toes grip, which loads the forefoot.
  • Correct size, measured. Feet change shape over years. Measure rather than assume, and fit to the larger foot.

Footwear and Insoles Work Together

A common and expensive mistake is buying good footwear and putting nothing in it, or buying a custom insole and putting it in a shoe with no depth to take it. The insole redistributes pressure; the shoe has to house the insole and hold the foot. Neither does the job alone.

So when we fit diabetic footwear we fit it with the insole that is going in it — see diabetic insoles & foot orthotics and custom orthotic insoles. If you already own footwear you like, bring it; often the practical answer is a custom insole made to fit the shoes you will actually wear.

Daily Foot Checks

Footwear is only half of it. If sensation in your feet is reduced, looking becomes your early warning system.

  • Look at both feet every day, including between the toes and the soles — use a mirror or ask someone if you cannot see the sole
  • Check inside your shoes with your hand before putting them on, for grit, a fold in the lining, or a protruding object
  • Look for redness, blisters, cracks, callus, a change in colour, or any discharge
  • Never walk barefoot, indoors included
  • Do not use hot water bottles or heaters on the feet if sensation is reduced
  • Do not cut callus or corns yourself, and avoid corn-removal chemicals

Contact a clinician promptly if you find a wound that is not healing, spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, a bad smell, or a foot that suddenly changes shape. Those are not footwear problems.

Silicone Restorations

After a toe or forefoot amputation, a silicone toe or forefoot restoration fills the shoe and restores the shape of the foot. It sits alongside your diabetic footwear and daily foot care rather than replacing any of it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Diabetic footwear is designed to reduce peak pressure and avoid rubbing on a foot that may have reduced sensation. The practical differences from an ordinary shoe are extra internal depth so a custom insole fits, a wide rounded toe box, a seam-free lining, adjustable fastening for swelling, and a cushioned sole. It is protective footwear, not a treatment.

Yes. We supply extra-depth diabetic shoes and MCR-footbed diabetic sandals, and we customise or make footwear where a foot will not safely fit a stock shoe - for example with a deformity, claw or hammer toes, a bunion, a partial foot amputation, or two feet of different sizes.

Please ask us. We supply diabetic shoes and MCR sandals; for indoor slippers, contact us with what you need and we will tell you honestly whether we can supply something suitable. What we would not recommend is a backless slipper for outdoor walking, because the foot slides and the toes grip to hold it on, which loads the forefoot.

That is usually the intention - diabetic footwear is built with the depth to take an insole. What matters is that the two are fitted together, because an insole changes how much room is left inside the shoe. Bring both, or have them fitted at the same time.

No footwear can promise that. Appropriate footwear and insoles are designed to help reduce and redistribute pressure, which is one part of protecting a foot, but they work alongside blood sugar control, daily foot checks and prompt medical attention when something changes. We will not tell you a shoe removes that risk.

It varies with the type and how much customisation is needed - MCR sandals sit at the lower end, extra-depth shoes above that, and fully custom footwear higher again. Rather than quote a figure that may not apply to your foot, message us on WhatsApp with your situation and we will give you an indicative range before you travel.

For stock footwear we can often help once we have accurate measurements, so message us and we will tell you what to send. Anything custom-made, and any case where an insole is being made with the footwear, needs the foot assessed and the footwear fitted in person at one of our centres.

Go by condition rather than a date. Replace it when the cushioning has flattened, the sole is worn unevenly, the lining has broken down or the fit has changed. A worn diabetic shoe has lost the cushioning it was bought for, and on a foot with reduced sensation that change is easy to miss.
